What Is Tubal Ligation?

Tubal ligation (also called “having your tubes tied”) is a permanent form of birth control. It involves blocking, cutting, or sealing the fallopian tubes to prevent eggs from reaching the uterus for fertilization. Why It’s Done • You are sure you do not want more children • You have a medical condition that makes pregnancy risky • You prefer a permanent, hormone-free contraceptive method Important: Tubal ligation is considered permanent and usually cannot be reversed.
