What Is Diagnostic Laparoscopy?
Diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows your doctor to directly view the organs inside your abdomen and pelvis using a thin, lighted instrument (laparoscope) inserted through small incisions. It helps diagnose conditions that aren’t easily seen on imaging tests.
Why It’s Done Your physician may recommend diagnostic laparoscopy to investigate: • Chronic pelvic or abdominal pain • Infertility or difficulty conceiving • Suspected endometriosis • Ectopic pregnancy evaluation • Unexplained masses or tumors • Chronic inflammatory conditions (e.g., pelvic inflammatory disease) • Abnormal imaging findings (ultrasound/CT) that need confirmation Possible Risks & Complications • Bleeding or infection at incision sites • Injury to bowel, bladder, blood vessels, or other organs (rare) • Anesthesia‑related reactions • Gas‑related discomfort (shoulder pain from residual CO₂) • Adhes
